Schumacher was then able to take the lead of the race after Callum Ilott lost time due to his car stalling in the pitlane.

Schumacher’s victory in the Formula Two feature race at Monza leaves him just three points adrift of Championship leader Robert Schwartzman.

Both Schumacher and Schwartzman are members of the Ferrari Driver Academy – the Maranello-based team’s young driver programme – and are vying for a seat in Formula One.

Last month, sources told Formula1News.co.uk that Schumacher will “almost certainly” have a seat on the Formula One grid next season with one of Ferrari’s customer teams.

The win for Mick Schumacher comes amid the Ferrari F1 team struggling at its home race.

For the first time since 1984, none of the Ferraris made it into the final part of qualifying at the Italian Grand Prix .
