Mclaren Expecting ‘New Normal’ In F1 From 2022

Mclaren team principal Andreas Seidl has said he is confident that we will see a “new normal” in Formula One from 2022 onwards, with the team being more competitive and F1 becoming consistently more entertaining across the grid.



“I am absolutely convinced that with what comes from 2022, with the budget cap, with another technical regulation where we should get closer to each other on the track, we will do everything to have [Grand Prix like Monza] more often or to hopefully have a new normal in Formula 1,” Seidl said in an interview with Motorsport-Total.com.

He also commented on Mercedes’ dominance in the hybrid-era of Formula One and how it often leads to boring, predictable races.



“Given the dominance of Mercedes , for which they worked hard for several years to achieve this dominance, of course they also deserve to drive where they drive, and unfortunately that leads to boring races,” he said.



“So it’s obviously a good thing at the moment when something like Monza happens,” Seidl said, pointing to last weekend’s thrilling race which saw Pierre Gasly take his first Grand Prix victory.



Continuing, he said the only realistic way to get similar races more frequently before 2022 is for the FIA to “artificially” slow Mercedes down or to introduce reverse-grid sprint races.



“I believe that the only way to have more interesting races in the next year and a half will be to artificially slow Mercedes down or create some kind of coincidence with reversed grid positions. That is the reality we are in.



“I think that’s the discussion that Mercedes should have with the FIA ​​or Formula 1 if they were open to something like that.”



After a strong performance at the Italian Grand Prix, Mclaren are now third in the Constructors’ Standings on 98 points.
