Pierre Gasly Looking To Replace Esteban Ocon At Renault

Scuderia AlphaTauri driver Pierre Gasly is reportedly eyeing a move to Renault for 2021, when the Enstone-based team will be rebranded Alpine.

Blick , a Zurich-based newspaper, claims that the Frenchman “is even supposed to negotiate with Renault for the seat next to comeback star Fernando Alonso, for compatriot Esteban Ocon.”

Gasly and Ocon were childhood friends and often competed against each other in karts, but they fell out for reasons which aren’t entirely clear and they remain on bad terms.

With Red Bull having ditched Gasly in 2019 after less than a season against Max Verstappen and the team’s management continuing to back Alex Albon despite his underwhelming and sometimes outright poor performances, a move to Alpine would be a highly promising exit strategy for Gasly.

Renault recorded their first podium since returning to Formula One in 2016 at the Eifel Grand Prix, and their car is looking increasingly competitive.

From Renault’s perspective, signing Gasly would mean they have two grand prix winners at the team next year, and it’d also be a way for them to stick it to Red Bull (as they did when they poached Daniel Ricciardo in 2018.)

However, despite Ocon being consistently outperformed by Daniel Ricciardo, Renault have defended the Frenchman and insisted he is making good progress.

So, it’s unclear if they would be open to sacking Ocon to make room for Gasly, especially as his contract doesn’t expire until the end of 2021.
