Max Verstappen Says Albon’s Performance ‘Not Very Good’ Despite Podium

Alex Albon won the second podium of his F1 career at the 2020 Bahrain Grand Prix, with him moving up to P3 after Sergio Perez’s Racing Point had an engine blowout in the final few laps of the race.

However, his Red Bull team-mate Max Verstappen wasn’t impressed by the result, as despite Albon finishing just one position behind him, he was considerably off his pace.

“I don’t think that if you are 30 or 40 seconds behind your team-mate, that’s very good,” Verstappen said in a post-race interview with Ziggo Sport.

“I can just be honest about that, right? It was a shame for Checo too, because I think he drove a very strong race. It’s nice for Alex that he is on the podium,” he added.

Meanwhile, Red Bull team principal Christian Horner said “days like today” will help Albon make his case to be retained by the team.

Continuing, he reiterated that Red Bull won’t make a decision on its driver line-up until after the season finale at Abu Dhabi:

“Alex benefitted from what happened to Perez, but I think his recovery from Friday’s crash was strong,” Horner said.

“No decisions about contracts will be made until the end of the season, but we do want Alex to be successful and will give him every chance.”

However, a source told Formula1News.co.uk earlier this month that Red Bull have already decided to drop Albon at the end of the year.
