Seidl: Di Resta Could Stand In For Ricciardo Or Norris At McLaren

Ex-F1 driver Paul di Resta has been confirmed as part of McLaren’s pool of reserve drivers.

McLaren have a deal with the Mercedes F1 Team to share the Silver Arrows’ two reserve drivers – Stoffel Vandoorne and Nyck de Vries – this season, but di Resta gives them another option should they be unavailable due to clashes with their Formula E commitments.

Based on the current 2021 F1 and Formula E calendars, there are three clashes, so should Daniel Ricciardo or Lando Norris be unable to race in any of these grand prix, di Resta could stand in.

Commenting on McLaren’s reserve driver situation ahead of this weekend’s Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, team principal Andreas Seidl said: “My focus is on this agreement we have with Mercedes.

“We have a good relationship also with Paul di Resta, who is also in possession of a Super Licence, so we have an agreement with him as well in order to jump in if the requirement is there.

“So we are prepared for different scenarios,” he added.

Di Resta last competed in Formula One at the 2017 Hungarian Grand Prix, when he filled in for Felipe Massa at Williams.

Since retiring from the pinnacle of motorsport, di Resta has formed part of Sky F1’s coverage and has raced sportscars.
