3 injured after car crashes, catches fire on Australian GP circuit

Three people have been injured in a car crash on a street in Melbourne which makes up part of Albert Park – the street circuit that is used for the Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix.



The car was stolen and caught fire as a result of the crash, according to emerging reports.



The crash and subsequent inferno occurred on Lakeside Drive, and the car has been identified as a Holden Astra.

The vehicle crashed through bollards before hitting a nearby tree on the aforementioned road which makes up roughly half of the Albert Park circuit.

The driver, a male, suffered lower leg injuries as a result of the crash, while a female passenger sustained concussion and bruising. The third, another female, suffered a broken wrist.



All of the injured are currently being treated at The Alfred Hospital and are in a stable condition, according to Victoria Police.



The car was reportedly stolen from a nearby area that same morning.



“Investigators have been told the driver of a Holden Astra travelling north along Lakeside Drive lost control and drove through bollards,” a Victora Police spokesperson said.



“The hatchback then crashed into a tree before igniting and bursting into flames,” the spokesperson added.
