Sebastian Vettel to make surprise appearance on British TV show

With the next grand prix weekend not until 20-22 May, Sebastian Vettel has decided to step away momentarily from Formula 1.

The Aston Martin driver has announced that he’ll be making a surprise appearance on the popular British political programme, Question Time.

Vettel will appear on the BBC show on Thursday 12 May, and he will answer questions from those in the audience as well as get involved in heated debates with the other panellists.

Similar to Lewis Hamilton, Vettel has become well-known over recent years for supporting various campaigns and raising environmental issues.

The four-time world champion has a number of times worn clothing in support of an issue, as well as make adjustments to his helmet design to highlight his support.

So just how does a Formula 1 driver end up going on a political programme during the longest season in history?

Vettel explained how the opportunity came about.

“It really was [a] coincidence, and I think it is an interesting opportunity, because it’s just different.

“[I’m] looking looking forward to it.”

The Aston Martin driver is remaining open-minded in regards to what he is expecting to be discussed on the show, Vettel believes there is “a lot that I can learn”.

“I’m fairly open [to what we discuss],” he told media.

“I think it’s a different format. I think there’s a lot that I can learn. Obviously, I have my opinion. I’m not saying it’s always right or wrong!

“But I think it will be interesting, because it will be a very different setting, and probably different sorts of questions or topics to be spoken about, so yeah, [I’m] fairly open at this point.”

Vettel’s appearance comes on the back of the inaugural Miami Grand Prix, which was yet another disastrous weekend for the German.

The 34-year-old was forced into retirement from the race late on, after being hit by Mick Schumacher at Turn 1.

The Haas driver dived up the inside of his “mentor”, with Vettel unaware that he was alongside.

Both had been fighting at the bottom end of the points places, however neither took any home.

Following his appearance on Question Time, Vettel will begin his preparation for the Spanish Grand Prix with Monaco coming a week after.
