Red Bull to shed weight in Barcelona as Ferrari bring ‘important’ upgrade

Red Bull’s latest major upgrade set to be implemented in Barcelona means that Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez will be running 3kg lighter.

The Austrian oufit are thought to have lost 5kg as a result of the changes they made to the car ahead of the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, and the pace advantage was said to be just over two tenths of a second per lap compared to Ferrari, and the result was the Dutchman taking victory in Bologna and then again two weeks later in Miami.

The RB18 is thought to be around the 806-808kg mark, and the additional loss will see them close in on the 798kg limit.

Adviser Dr Helmut Marko confirmed the weight loss, and revealed that themselves and Ferrari are neck-and-neck as they head into the crucial European stage of the season.

“We will have new parts [in Spain] and will finally reach our optimum weight. So far we have been quite a bit over the required minimum weight of 798 kilograms,” he told F1-Insider.com.

“Us and Ferrari are on an equal footing. We are still looking forward to the big fight and we have full confidence in the FIA to ensure that everything goes well.”

Ferrari boss Mattia Binotto confirmed that his team will also be bringing some changes to the Spanish Grand Prix and, having said in Bologna that this season will be a “race-by-race” fight, highlighted the importance of keeping up with Red Bull’s development.

“In the next races it will be at least our turn to try to develop as much as we can the car by introducing upgrades,” he said.

“I think it’s not a surprise that we may have a package in Barcelona which will be important for us.

“As usual I hope that the package we are introducing is working as expected in order to try to catch up the current gap we’ve got compared to the Red Bull.”

Ferrari lead Red Bull by six points in the Constructors’ Championship after Charles Leclerc’s two wins, while Verstappen’s victories have been intertwined with reliability failures in Bahrain and Australia.
