Video of Perez making misogynistic comment about Toto’s wife resurfaces after Red Bull suspend driver

A misogynistic joke by Sergio Perez in 2014 has resurfaced amid the controversy surrounding Red Bull junior driver Juri Vips.



Vips has been suspended by the Austrian outfit after he used a racial slur during a livestream with fellow Red Bull and Formula 2 driver Liam Lawson.



That also came after he allegedly made a homophobic comment when Lawson asked him to wear a pink hat.

Vips has since apologised, but a video of Perez making a joke about women in motorsport has cropped up since then.







The Mexican was speaking about Williams reserve driver Susie Wolff, who had competed in first practice at the British Grand Prix earlier in the season.



There was speculation that she might be in line for a seat in Formula 1 but this, sadly, never materialised for the Briton.



Perez, who was at Force India at the time, was asked if he would like to have a woman as his team-mate in the pinnacle of motorsport.



“Imagine if a woman beats you, that would be it,” he joked.



“It’s better that she goes to the kitchen.”

The now 32-year-old apologised for the comment and accepted that, while it was a joke, it was not entirely harmless.



“I feel really ashamed by the way my words have been distorted about the opportunity of racing side by side with a woman,” he said, quoted by the BBC.

“I want to be absolutely clear that my intention was not to offend anybody, and my comment does not reflect a ‘macho’ posture on my behalf. 



“I recognise that my comment, even though it was intended as a joke, was absolutely out of place and also unacceptable.



“With Susie Wolff I hold a very close friendship and I admire her greatly for her determination; I wish her the best of luck as a person and as a professional driver.”



Wolff, who is married to Mercedes team principal Toto, took to social media to defend Perez.



“Saw some comments made by Sergio Perez as I was making dinner in the kitchen last night. Please give him a break,” she stated.



“His comments were taken completely out of context. Anyway, as my family will tell you, I drive better than I cook!”
