British ex-F1 driver lambasts Fernando Alonso for ‘unfair’ Lewis Hamilton comment

Ex-F1 driver and Sky Sports pundit Martin Brundle has called Fernando Alonso out over his unfair radio comment towards Sir Lewis Hamilton, following on from the former team-mates opening lap collision at the Belgian Grand Prix.



Both Alonso and Hamilton made excellent starts to the race, with the duo running second and third on the opening lap down the Kemmel straight.



As they approached Les Combes, Hamilton swooped to the outside of Alonso to attempt an overtake.



Whilst going around the outside of the Spaniard, Hamilton cut across the front of the double World Champion at the apex of the corner, resulting in heavy contact.

The rear of Hamilton’s W13 was sent skywards, with his car performing somewhat of a nosedive.



His car landed heavily back onto the circuit, resulting in an almost instant retirement for Hamilton, his first of the season.



Alonso somehow came out of the collision without damage but did have some strong words for the seven-time World Champion.



“I mean, we had a mega start but this guy only knows how to drive and start in first,” Alonso said over the team radio after the incident happened, followed by calling the Mercedes F1 driver an “idiot”.



Hamilton did claim full responsibility for the incident, which was deemed a racing incident by the race director.



Alonso had mellowed out after the race and also agreed that it was simply a racing incident.



Brundle; however, was still left with the feeling that what Alonso said about Hamilton was wrong, with the Brit being one of the “cleanest” drivers in the “history of F1”.



Even Brundle agreed it was Hamilton’s fault, but that Alonso’s following radio comment was “wholly inaccurate and unfair”.

“Lewis said he couldn’t see Fernando in his blind spot but frankly he was bound to be there somewhere, and the Spaniard tried his best to stay to the inside and give space,” Brundle said in his Sky F1 column.



“Lewis saw the footage and immediately put his hand up and correctly accepted full responsibility. Fernando’s radio comments, albeit fuelled by anger and adrenaline, about Lewis only being able to win from the front were in my opinion wholly inaccurate and unfair.



“Lewis is one of the fairest and cleanest drivers in the history of F1, he hasn’t needed to resort to too many professional fouls given his relentless speed, and just cast your mind back to Brazil last year to remember how he can scythe through the field. Twice.”
