Italian journalist reveals tensions between Mattia Binotto and Ferrari management

It has been a whirlwind few days for Ferrari, who have now been handed their team principal’s resignation just days after publicly squashing claims that he would be sacked.



The team enjoyed a strong start to the 2022 season, boasting the fastest car and a strong driver pairing as Red Bull and Mercedes faltered.



Strategy errors made by Mattia Binotto and his team, combined with the strength of Max Verstappen and Red Bull following their early wobble, saw the Scuderia fall significantly far behind the energy drink giants, who won both championships unopposed.



Ferrari had the car and the drivers to compete for the majority of the season, but the team shooting themselves in the foot over and over again was what cost them multiple victories.

Calciomercato have now published a report on Binotto’s resignation, claiming that the team principal never shared a strong relationship with the powers that be at Ferrari.



“Binotto was a legacy of [ex-CEO] Sergio Marchionne,” claims the report.



“But John Elkann never got on with Binotto. They were like water and oil. And everyone knew it.



“He never had the support of its president on the big issues. Have you ever heard a word from Elkann about the Red Bull budget cap or the adjusted rules that were pro-Mercedes? Zero.



“There was a lack of real support. The owner did not believe in his top manager.”



Binotto came up through the ranks at Ferrari and was a much sought after individual before he made the step up to become team principal for the Scuderia.



The Swiss has claimed that he never expected Ferrari to challenge for the title in 2022, and believes that it is harsh to criticise his team’s failure to match Red Bull when it was never their plan to be able to do so.

Alfa Romeo’s Fred Vasseur is currently looking the most likely to take the top job at Ferrari, making the step up after a strong performance in charge of sixth place Alfa Romeo.



As for Binotto, Calciomercato have stunningly claimed that only days after making the decision to leave Ferrari, he is in communication with Audi over a role with the team when they enter the sport in 2026.



Audi will be completing a takeover of Sauber, with the plan of joining the grid when the new engine regulations come into effect at the start of the 2026 season, and will be looking for key staff and drivers as they get ever closer to their debut season.
