Lando Norris opens up on talks with Red Bull

Since joining McLaren in 2019 Lando Norris has been one of the most impressive drivers in Formula 1, often defying expectation and overachieving in his midfield car.

The 23-year-old finished as the best of the rest driver in 2022 and was also the only driver outside of the top three teams to score a podium over the course of a Red Bull dominated season.

The energy drink giants cruised to both championship titles while their rivals struggled to adapt to the new regulation changes that came into effect at the start of the year, but there is clearly a talent gap in the garage.

Sergio Perez only managed to beat Max Verstappen in four races out of twenty-five, meaning that most of the points scored for the team were because of the Dutchman’s dominance.

With Norris being tipped as a future world champion, pundits have suggested that a Verstappen-Norris partnership would be a formidable one, should Red Bull decide not to stick with Perez as their second driver.

Norris has been quick to shut down rumours that he could quit McLaren for Red Bull however, suggesting that although he has previously spoken to Red Bull, staying at McLaren is best for him in the present.

“Of course there are talks with other people from time to time,” said Norris.

“You always ask yourself the question: What is the best thing for my career? I want to win and win world championships.

“There have been talks with Red Bull. They are a team that has been in the top three for years. But that just shows even more how much confidence I have in McLaren. Although there were talks, I felt McLaren was better for me to achieve my goals.”

Norris’ loyalty to McLaren will come as little relief to Sergio Perez, as Daniel Ricciardo and Nyck de Vries have also been linked to his Red Bull seat in recent weeks, as the Mexican continues to play the wingman role for Verstappen.

McLaren’s new state-of-the-art wind tunnel should be completed at some point next year, meaning that the team should be able to compete with the top teams in the coming years.

Should Norris not see his take make the required steps forward to become champions before his contract is up, a move to Red Bull could become a real possibility for the Brit.
