Red Bull break silence on rumoured Ford announcement

Fans of Red Bull and/or Ford might find themselves feeling rather disappointed, with AlphaTauri boss Franz Tost having revealed that the Austrians are launching their 2023 car in New York not to announce a partnership with the American manufacturer, but for fashion week.



It had been massively speculated that Red Bull’s 2023 launch would also see a future partnership with Ford announced; however, it appears that isn’t the case.



“It’s fashion week there,” Tost told Sport1. “That’s why we’re going there.”



Whilst Red Bull are launching their car on February 3 in New York, AlphaTauri will be unveiling theirs to the world on February 11, again in New York.

Tost is hopeful that 2023 will be a considerably better season for the Faenza-based outfit, who slipped to ninth in the Constructors’ Championship last season.



To ensure that the team are in a better position heading into the new season than they were last year, the Austrian worked as normal on his 67th birthday, with the side being determined to bounce back.



“As always, I was in the office at 7 and got home sometime after dark,” he revealed.



Tost was also asked to discuss the current situation going on in Germany, which has seen an astonishing fall in people actually wanting to watch F1, to the point where it won’t even be shown on free-to-air television this season.



“People need heroes,” said the Austrian, “and they need them made of flesh and blood, not metal.”



In 2010, seven German drivers were on the F1 grid; this season there’ll be just one.



Nico Hulkenberg made his debut back in 2010, so was one of the seven German drivers on the grid, which also included Mick Schumacher’s father.



“In the past, you wanted to see Michael Schumacher win, not the engine or the Mercedes car,” said Tost.



“Another example is Boris Becker, because before him, interest in tennis was more reserved for the affluent.



“That changed abruptly with Boris and Steffi Graf’s success. Suddenly all the kids wanted to play tennis.”

Tost believes that Schumacher must get himself back into a racing seat as quickly as possible to remain relevant in Germany, with the 23-year-old having been huge for German motorsport fans given who his father is.



“You’re only really noticed by the general public if you’re constantly in focus. And you only do that as a pilot,” said Tost.



“That’s why it’s important that Mick finds his way back onto the grid as quickly as possible. It’s not impossible, but it won’t be easy either.”
