Oscar Piastri makes ‘crazy’ prediction about 2023 Australian Grand Prix

McLaren’s Oscar Piastri is braced for “a pretty crazy experience” as Formula One heads to Melbourne next weekend for the third round of the 2023 season.

Piastri’s Formula One career has gotten off to a rocky start, becoming the first to retire from the opening race of the season and finishing down in 15 th  in Jeddah.

“Obviously, it’s my first home race as a driver, which will be an amazing experience, regardless of how it goes. So yeah, can’t wait,” Piastri told Speedcafe.

“Even last year, being a reserve driver, it was already a pretty crazy experience,” he continued. “So I think I’ve got somewhat of an idea to expect but I’m pretty sure it’ll be another step crazier this year.

“It’s an honour to have a home race and, for me, in my hometown as well, it’s going to be very special.”

Piastri showed what he’s capable of in qualifying at the Jeddah Corniche Circuit, as he managed to get his car into the top 10. However, lap one contact with Alpine driver Pierre Gasly saw his chance at points slip from his grasp.

Having pitted for a new front wing, Piastri managed to go the distance for the remainder of the race, completing 49 laps on the hard tyres and getting ahead of the Alfa Romeo of Valtteri Bottas and the Williams of Logan Sargeant.

The lap one incident in Saudi Arabia also caused problems for Piastri’s teammate who had dropped out of qualifying with a mechanical issue.

After the piece of Piastri’s front wing flew off his car, it connected with the McLaren of Lando Norris, forcing the Belgian-British driver to also pit for a new front wing.

The unfortunate start for the season has seen McLaren fall to last in the Constructors’ battle, as they have failed to secure any points.
