Fernando Alonso claims Alpine would reject Adrian Newey in fresh jibe

Double World Champion Fernando Alonso is certainly not afraid of causing drama, with the Spaniard having taken another shot at his former team Alpine.



The Spaniard, of course, left Alpine at the end of last season in order to move to Aston Martin, after the Silverstone-based side offered him a longer contract.



It’s a move that has so far worked out perfectly for Alonso and Aston Martin, with the 41-year-old having claimed back-to-back third place finishes in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia.



Alonso has started the season so strongly, in fact, that some have labelled the veteran as a potential title contender, depending on how good the British side’s upgrades are this season.

The Spanish driver signed for Aston Martin on a two-year deal with the option for a third season, after four-time World Champion Sebastian Vettel announced his retirement from the sport prior to last season’s Hungarian Grand Prix.



The move did come as a bit of a shock, after most expected the Spaniard to sign a one-year extension with Alpine.



Supposedly, Alonso was unhappy with the contract that Alpine offered him after demanding a multi-year deal, something Aston Martin had no issue offering.



The Spaniard’s age is a speculated reason for this, with Alpine possessing plenty of young talent in their academy.



Interestingly, Alonso also appears to believe his age was the Enstone-based team’s issue, after making a recent jibe aimed at team principal Otmar Szafnauer.



Following reports that Red Bull chief technical officer Adrian Newey is approaching the end of his deal, it has been pondered whether the remarkable engineer would consider a move elsewhere.



Should Newey opt for a new challenge, then Alonso doesn’t see Alpine being interested in his services because “he’s 64 years old”.



Alonso doesn’t see why age is such an issue and has hit out at Szafnauer for seemingly believing so, before adding that “Aston were not afraid”.

“I supposed Otmar wouldn’t sign Adrian Newey. He’s 64 years old,” said Alonso.



“Otmar played his part, but that doesn’t work with me. Age shouldn’t be a huge factor for drivers.



“Aston were not afraid.”
