Lewis Hamilton fumes at rival driver at 2023 Australian GP

Seven-time World Champion Lewis Hamilton has so far enjoyed a solid Australian Grand Prix, with the Mercedes driver having qualified on the second row of the grid for Sunday’s race at the Albert Park Circuit.

Hamilton will start the race from third on Sunday after an impressive qualifying, at the circuit he’s previously claimed eight pole positions at.

Despite having claimed pole eight times in Melbourne, the 38-year-old has only ever claimed victory twice, with that number likely set to stay the same unless polesitter Max Verstappen has a catastrophic Grand Prix.

The Mercedes driver is clearly a fan of the fast track, despite his weekend having almost started with a crash.

Hamilton narrowly avoided one of the AlphaTauri drivers whilst on a hot lap in FP1, whilst the AlphaTauri driver was on a cooldown lap.

The incident occurred at Turn 11, with Hamilton having immediately informed his team that it was “dangerous driving” by the midfield driver.

Thankfully for the 103-time race winner, that’s been his only incident of the weekend, with qualifying having been beautifully smooth for the 103-time polesitter.

He is once again starting behind team-mate George Russell, though, after the former Williams driver claimed second on the grid.

Just over a tenth separated the Mercedes duo, with Russell having now out-qualified Hamilton at every Grand Prix this season.

Hamilton wasn’t too concerned about having qualified behind his team-mate once again, with the Stevenage-born driver having praised Russell for doing a “fantastic job”.

The veteran also shared his target of giving Red Bull “a run for their money” on Sunday.

“I’m so happy with this. This is totally unexpected. Really, really proud of the team,” Hamilton said after Q3.

“George did a fantastic job today, so for us to be up on the two front rows is honestly a dream for us.

“We’re all working as hard as we can to get right back up the front, and so to be this close to Red Bull is honestly incredible.

“I hope tomorrow we can give them a bit of a run for their money and we hope the weather is good.”
