Lewis Hamilton makes big claim about new Mercedes contract

Lewis Hamilton is at the centre of rampant speculation within the drivers’ market, as rumours swirl about his future in Formula 1 amid prolonged negotiations with Mercedes.



Hamilton and Mercedes have repeatedly claimed that the seven-time world champion will sign a contract extension but, as of yet, no deal is in sight.



“My team is working closely behind the scenes with Toto [Wolff], we are almost at the end of having a contract ready,” Hamilton told reporters in Monaco.



Ahead of Monaco, it has now been reported that another option is potentially on the table, as Ferrari are believed to have offered a sizeable deal to the Brit in a bid to steal him away from Mercedes next year.

With Hamilton’s contract expiring in a few months, details are beginning to emerge about the potential contract the Brit could receive from the Silver Arrows to secure his services into the future.



Hamilton has been reported as looking for a two-year contract from Mercedes worth £125 million plus a further 10 year commitment as an ambassador for Mercedes, bringing the total value of the deal to £222 million.

However, a Mercedes spokesperson quashed this report in a statement to German outlet SID, explaining that “this is wild speculation” and “completely unfounded.”



While the contract negotiations will be hanging over Hamilton, the Mercedes driver will be firmly focused on the Monaco Grand Prix this weekend, as he looks to start a comeback with new parts fitted to the W14.



In Free Practice 1, Hamilton secured P3 with a time of 1 minute 14 seconds before dropping to P6 in Free Practice 2 just 0.5 seconds behind Max Verstappen’s P1 time.
