Fernando Alonso threatens Sergio Perez over the radio

Fernando Alonso came agonisingly close to his first pole position since the 2012 German Grand Prix, with the Spaniard having claimed second on the grid for Sunday’s Monaco Grand Prix.

With reigning World Champion Max Verstappen having been slower than Alonso through the first two sectors, it was looking for all the world like the Aston Martin driver was going to claim pole at the Circuit de Monaco.

Verstappen though, performed the most sensational final sector, with him having found the three tenths he required to claim pole.

It was nevertheless a remarkable effort from Alonso once again, who could lead into the first corner should he make a better start than Verstappen.

He admitted after qualifying that the level of risk he was taking was “uncomfortable”, with him having gone “over the limit” in an attempt to claim a famous pole position.

“I think both laps in Q3 we were increasing the level of risk to an uncomfortable level,” Alonso said after qualifying, as reported by ESPN.

“I think both laps were a little bit over the limit sometimes but everything went fine, last sector seems our weakest part of the circuit, I think already final practice we were eighth quickest there, so maybe there is something going on there we need to analyse a bit.”

The Spaniard would’ve perhaps been pleased to see Sergio Perez qualify last for Sunday’s race, with the 2022 Monaco GP winner having crashed in Q1.

Perez went into the opening corner too fast, resulting in him losing the rear of his RB19.

Alonso was furious with the Mexican earlier in the weekend after he was severely blocked by the 33-year-old, something which the 41-year-old labelled as “incredible”.

Following the incident in Free Practice 1, Alonso stated that he would remain on the “racing line all the slow laps”, something he thankfully didn’t do.

“Yeah these guys are incredible, incredible,” Alonso said over the team radio, with his message having been directed at Red Bull.

“Yeah, you did your best there and he didn’t help that. Copy that, replied the veteran’s race engineer.

“Yeah I don’t get it,” replied Alonso, “I will be on the racing line all the slow laps,” he threatened.

“Yeah copy that. It was Perez,” revealed the Spaniard’s race engineer.
