Lewis Hamilton warned: ‘One swallow does not make a summer’

Max Verstappen demonstrated his dominance during the Spanish Grand Prix weekend as he cruised to victory, leaving Mercedes trailing behind despite their notable progress.

With the Silver Arrows bouncing back, international media outfits have shifted focus to Mercedes’ chances of challenging Verstappen’s supremacy.

Swiss outlet Blick characterises Lewis Hamilton’s comment after his second-place finish in Spain as a declaration of war against Red Bull.

Hamilton stated that they will be fighting against Red Bull until the end of 2024. The newspaper also highlights the optimism of both George Russell and Hamilton following their double podium finish, as they see opportunities for success in future races.

Ferrari showcased some promising performance but failed to convert their starting position to a podium, as Carlos Sainz slipped down the rankings.

While Aston Martin showed improvement compared to previous seasons, it was Mercedes with their “new” W14 car that caught Verstappen’s attention as a potential challenger.

The Guardian Newspaper’s headline reads, “Max Verstappen beats resurgent Mercedes duo to win Spanish Grand Prix.”

Despite a strong race from Hamilton and Russell, it is worth noting that they had no chance against Verstappen, who finished a staggering 24 seconds ahead of Hamilton.

“There is an undeniable hint of a Mercedes resurgence, but one swallow does not make a summer,” The Guardian stated.

Verstappen’s victory from start to finish was dominant, but the battle behind him has become more interesting.

Marca emphasised that Verstappen secured an effortless victory in the Spanish Grand Prix, as his main title contenders, including Perez and Fernando Alonso, failed to secure podium finishes, making it easier for Verstappen to extend his lead.

However, Marca recognised the “dangerous side” that Mercedes displayed.

“It was a quiet walk in Montmelo for Max Verstappen,” Marca reported. “Red Bull’s Dutchman claimed his fifth win of the season, strengthening his grip on a third consecutive world title.”

Ferrari had little reason to celebrate after a disappointing weekend. Gazzetta’s post-race headline read: “Verstappen does what he wants: dominance over Hamilton and Russell.”

The Italian outlet remarked on Ferrari’s underwhelming performance, with Charles Leclerc finishing outside the points and Sainz being outperformed by Perez.

According to Le Monde, nothing could stand in Verstappen’s way: “With no challenger, Verstappen wins the Spanish GP and continues his dominance.”

The French newspaper noted the repetitive nature of this Formula 1 season, where Verstappen secured his third consecutive victory and fifth of the season effortlessly.

From pole position, the Dutchman proved his fearlessness against both competitors and adverse weather conditions.
