Ferrari upgrades provide Lewis Hamilton lifeline after Miami GP radio incident
Lewis Hamilton’s Miami Grand Prix weekend was filled with disappointment, but Ferrari team principal Fred Vasseur has offered a small glimmer of hope through upcoming upgrades. The British driver, who finished eighth, voiced clear frustration with delayed team orders over the radio, adding to the discontent.
Ferrari Admits Weaknesses in Miami Performance
Ferrari’s SF-25 struggled significantly in Miami, particularly in slower corners, leading the team to fall behind Red Bull, McLaren, and Mercedes in terms of performance. Despite a solid start to the season, the race highlighted major issues in the car’s handling that the team had not yet resolved.
Fred Vasseur addressed the situation following the race, acknowledging the team’s poor pace and explaining the challenges they faced. “We haven’t found the best balance,” Vasseur said. “We struggled a lot and our best lap in qualifying came on used tyres. It’s the first time that’s happened in two years. This is frustrating. We have to work and fix our problems, one at a time and improve.”
Imola and Barcelona Set for Key Upgrades
The team’s path forward includes incremental improvements set to debut at the next race in Imola, followed by more significant updates in Spain at the end of May. “We will have something to take a small step forward [in Imola] and then there will be another step in Barcelona,” Vasseur confirmed.
However, he cautioned against overreliance on upgrades alone. “We have to find the best compromise with the car and put everything together,” he emphasized.
Tyres Pose Bigger Issue Than Car Design
While the SF-25’s characteristics were in question, Vasseur pointed to tyre performance as the bigger issue. “It’s much more a question of the tyres than the characteristics of the car. In some moments we managed to extract much more potential from the tyres than this weekend and from that comes the performance,” he explained.
With Hamilton and teammate Charles Leclerc awaiting improvements, all eyes will now be on Ferrari’s progress in Imola as the team looks to climb back into the title fight.
