Franco Colapinto joining Alpine shakes up Formula 1 grid

Franco Colapinto is back on the Formula 1 grid — and his return has already set off a wave of changes within the Alpine camp.

From Reserve to Race Seat

Colapinto, who had been left without a permanent seat after stepping in for Logan Sargeant at Williams in 2024, was later recruited by Alpine as a reserve driver. Speculation had long surrounded Jack Doohan’s contract, and it became clear his deal only covered the first six races of the season.

Following the Miami Grand Prix, Alpine made the bold decision to promote Colapinto into Doohan’s seat for the next five races. The timing suggests that team advisor Flavio Briatore was instrumental in making the change happen.

Alpine’s Internal Shake-Up

The driver swap wasn’t the only significant shift at Alpine. Team principal Oliver Oakes announced his resignation shortly after the Miami weekend, leaving Briatore to step in as acting team boss while continuing his advisory role.

The move gives Colapinto a narrow window to prove himself, with a performance review set for July’s British Grand Prix. If he delivers, the seat could become permanent.

Colapinto Brings the Hype

What Colapinto lacks in experience, he more than makes up for in popularity and marketability. Backed by major Argentine sponsors and a loyal fanbase, his return is expected to generate massive attention.

Photographer Kym Illman said, “Franco scoring the drive in Williams last year ignited a wave of enthusiasm in Argentina… Franco will be in the car at Imola and watch those viewership numbers for Latin America skyrocket.”

Colapinto’s reentry is more than a racing decision — it’s a strategic move that could elevate Alpine’s presence in South America and beyond.
