Red Bull issue update on Yuki Tsunoda’s future
Yuki Tsunoda started 2025 with sister squad Racing Bulls but was drafted into Red Bull after just two races to replace Liam Lawson.
The promotion put him alongside four-time champion Max Verstappen, creating an immediate performance benchmark.
Settling Beside A World Champion
Chief engineer Paul Monaghan praised Tsunoda’s attitude, noting, “He seems to be settling in really well, actually.
“It’s not the easiest situation to deal with.”
Monaghan added that Tsunoda has been “frank in his comments” and “a good member of the team” despite the pressure.
Points On The Board
The Japanese driver scored minor points in Bahrain and collected sixth in the Miami sprint plus tenth in the main race, already eclipsing Lawson’s short tally.
Those results convinced engineers that adaptation is progressing, even if Verstappen remains comfortably ahead in outright pace.
Intimidation Test And Marko’s Warning
Monaghan said Tsunoda “doesn’t seem intimidated by being Max’s team-mate,” an assessment echoed by Helmut Marko.
Marko cautioned, “He’s the first [Verstappen] team-mate who can get a taste of Max’s performance.
Unfortunately, when the pressure increases, he still makes mistakes.”
Future Prospects
Contract decisions for 2026 will hinge on whether Tsunoda can close the gap further and minimise race-day errors.
For now, the early appraisal is positive, and Red Bull believes the 25-year-old’s outspoken personality can energise garage dynamics during a long season.
