Fernando Alonso Blames Lewis Hamilton for Off-Track Incident at 2025 Austrian GP

Fernando Alonso believes Lewis Hamilton was slightly too aggressive during an overtake maneuver at the Austrian Grand Prix , causing him to run off track to avoid a collision.

The two-time world champion, who started 11th, climbed up to seventh by the end of the race at the Red Bull Ring.

Alonso used a one-stop strategy which put him ahead of Hamilton after the Ferrari driver’s pit stop.

As Hamilton attempted a DRS-assisted overtake at Turn 1, Alonso was forced off track.

“Hamilton was a little bit late. I had to go off to avoid an incident, but all good,” Alonso told his Aston Martin team over the radio.

His race engineer Andrew Vizard acknowledged the situation, replying, “Copy, we saw mate. Let’s just get back, you’re doing a good job.”

Strategic Use of DRS Key to Finish

Alonso explained post-race that he made a conscious decision not to overtake Liam Lawson, who was ahead of him for most of the race.

“I never wanted to pass Liam at any point,” Alonso said.

“I did a race as if it were a time trial on a bicycle. I just had to stay tucked in behind, take advantage of the three DRS straights, and then in the four corners in between push like it was qualifying to get back into the DRS.”

He added: “In fact, they asked me: ‘When do we stop?’ and I replied: ‘When he stops!’ because I didn’t have that kind of pace.”

The strategy paid off, helping him secure valuable points.

Alonso is now 13th in the Drivers’ Championship with 14 points, level with team-mate Lance Stroll.

Aston Martin holds eighth in the Constructors’ Championship with 28 points, just behind Haas and slightly ahead of Sauber.
