Flavio Briatore Makes Franco Colapinto Revelation After Pierre Gasly Signs Contract
Alpine Formula 1 team boss Flavio Briatore has praised Alpine’s decision to extend Pierre Gasly’s contract, calling the French driver “one of the best on the grid.”
Briatore also suggested that continuity may keep Franco Colapinto in the team, though no final decision has been made on Alpine’s 2026 driver lineup.
Gasly’s Role as Team Pillar
Gasly joined Alpine in 2023 and has quickly become central to the French outfit’s ambitions.
Ahead of the Italian Grand Prix weekend, the 28-year-old signed a three-year extension, securing his place through the next phase of the team’s project.
“Gasly’s renewal was fundamental for the team, because he is one of the best drivers on the grid and one of the pillars of the project,” Briatore told AFP.
“He is part of the family and wants to win with us.”
His retention provides Alpine with stability at a time when several mid-field teams are reassessing their long-term strategies.
Colapinto’s Position Still Uncertain
Briatore also weighed in on the future of Franco Colapinto, who replaced Jack Doohan earlier this season at the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix.
The Argentine rookie has yet to score points, with his best result an 11th-place finish at Zandvoort.
“The second driver? The team needs stability, and the possibility of keeping the same two drivers for next year is part of that stability,” Briatore said.
“For now, we haven’t decided yet, but normally, if you want stability, it means you have to keep both drivers. The most important thing now, however, is to build a car that works.”
Building for 2026
While Colapinto’s long-term prospects remain unclear, Briatore’s comments suggest Alpine is leaning toward maintaining continuity as it develops its car for 2026 regulations.
The emphasis, however, will be on delivering a competitive machine that can allow both drivers to consistently fight for points.
For Gasly, the extension represents faith in his leadership role.
For Colapinto, it signals a potential chance to cement his place despite a challenging start.
As Alpine eyes the future, the balance between experience and development will define its trajectory heading into a new era of Formula 1.
