Ex-F1 Driver Reacts to Liam Lawson’s ‘Tactics’ Against Yuki Tsunoda

Liam Lawson has received support after a collision with Yuki Tsunoda at the Italian Grand Prix drew criticism from some quarters.

The incident took place as both drivers struggled outside the points, and it sparked debate over the boundaries of aggressive racing.

The On-Track Incident

During the race, Lawson attempted a move around the outside at Turn 4, the second chicane at Monza.

Although he positioned himself on the outside of Tsunoda, Lawson did not get far enough alongside to gain protection under Formula 1’s overtaking rules.

As Tsunoda swept across to claim the inside line, contact occurred, forcing both drivers onto the run-off and leaving them to salvage disappointing finishes.

Criticism and Defense

Some observers suggested that Lawson was overly aggressive in attempting the move.

However, former F1 driver Perry McCarthy came to the New Zealander’s defense, arguing that the attempt was strategically sound.

“Liam was quite right to be on the outside, because if you can make Yuki break too late on the inside, Yuki can’t make the corner,” McCarthy told RacingNews365.

“That’s what I think pundits were missing on TV, so I’m in favour of what Lawson was trying to do and put Yuki off, he just did not leave enough room for it.”

Pressure and Team Dynamics

McCarthy highlighted the competitive context of the battle.

“This is the Red Bull junior team versus the Red Bull senior team, and you’ve got a job to do out there, you’ve got to hound somebody and pressure them,” he said.

“Yuki is on the inside, and he came across because he wants the better turn-in angle, and with Liam placing his car there, if Yuki hadn’t come across, then he’d have to brake and turn in at a more acute angle, and that will lead to a mistake.

So I’m totally in favour in Liam’s tactics.”

Lessons Moving Forward

The clash left both drivers with no points, but McCarthy’s comments suggest Lawson’s approach was in line with the aggressive mentality expected in Formula 1.

For Lawson, the Italian Grand Prix was another chance to prove his ability to fight seasoned drivers under pressure.

While the execution may not have yielded results, the intent to pressure Tsunoda was praised as part of the natural process of learning at the top level of the sport.

The debate underscores the fine margins between aggression and recklessness in Formula 1, particularly for young drivers eager to establish themselves.
