Sainz Slams Pointless Coverage For Ruining F1 For Paying Fans

As every sports fan knows the modern world of broadcasting brings with it plenty of benefits to enable you to keep up to date with the latest events, particularly when they are hosted in far flung places around the planet and although that comes with the cost of juggling almost endless subscriptions these days, it is of special benefit to Formula One fans as the race teams make their way around the globe

With the increased saturation and the endless need to fill the airwaves with commentary and glorious technical insights, fans have also begun to get used to a bit of filling and padding designed to just ease a broadcast through by wasting a few seconds in a way that does not quite feel like the waste it is. We see it in football, rugby and you can probably get  tennis odds  on how often ‘faces’ in the crowd will be shown and Williams’ Carlos Sainz has picked up on this recently and he has politely pointed out that the television coverage of F1 is now starting to go ‘overboard a little’ for a number of reasons. At last Sunday’s Singapore Grand Prix, fans eagerly watching on at home again missed some key moments of the battles that were taking place on the race track because the cameras decided to pan away and start showing girlfriends of the drivers taking part and celebrities that were in attendance at the garages.

Whilst clearly designed to help pad the coverage and give the commentators something new and fresh to talk about briefly to keep the entertainment going, it unfortunately meant that viewers missed some key overtakes, including Fernando Alonso chasing down Lewis Hamilton whilst suffering from a problematic brake issue for seventh place in the final laps. 31 year old Sainz’s own recovery drive from the back of the grid and into tenth place was also rarely featured in the world feed coverage, which is supervised directly by F1 itself, but he did not so much mind that (although it was an issue) as he was more concerned that viewers were effectively being delivered fluff with girlfriend’s and celebrities being shown. Speaking after the race to Spanish radio station El Partidazo de COPE, he commented that race bosses should never forget the main track action itself as that is the coverage that people are actually tuning in for, and ultimately spending their hard earned cash on. Sainz  was not the only one to pass comment on the way that the coverage seems to have turned even further in more recent times, as Fernando Alonso also joined in with the polite criticism with a barbed social media post of his own, and whilst they appreciated that ‘reaction shots’ can add to the drama at key points, Sainz pointed out that the production teams had to ‘respect’ the competition as reaction shots are one thing, but then fans missing out on track action just for the sake of showing a celebrity or girlfriend was a pointless folly for everyone involved. An F1 spokesperson insisted that their focus is always on providing the best possible coverage to fans so that they do not miss a moment of the action, but there will certainly be those fans out there who agree with the comments of the drivers.
