How Liam Lawson Narrowly Avoided Shocking Marshall Incident at 2025 Mexico GP

New footage has emerged showing Formula 1 driver Liam Lawson’s close call with two marshals during the Mexican Grand Prix, an incident that has raised fresh safety concerns.

The Racing Bulls driver came dangerously close to hitting two track marshals who were crossing the circuit to collect debris between Turns 1 and 2 at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez.

Footage Shows Near Miss After Early Pit Stop

Videos from spectators in the grandstands revealed two marshals running across the track to retrieve debris from the grass before quickly retreating to their post at Turn 1.

Lawson, who had just exited the pits following contact with Williams driver Carlos Sainz Jr. on the opening lap, was caught by surprise as he came around the corner.

Because Lawson had pitted on the second lap, roughly 20 seconds had elapsed since the last car — Alpine’s Franco Colapinto — passed through the area, leaving the marshals believing the track was clear.

Lawson Slams “Dangerous” Situation

After the race, Lawson described the incident as “unacceptable,” saying he “couldn’t believe” what had unfolded in front of him.

The New Zealand driver avoided contact by mere seconds, narrowly missing both marshals as they hurried off the circuit.

He later expressed his frustration with race officials, arguing that safety protocols should have prevented such a situation.

FIA Launches Investigation

Following the race, the FIA issued a statement clarifying the sequence of events.

“Following a Turn One incident, race control was informed that debris was present on the track at the apex of that corner,” the governing body said.

“On lap three, marshals were alerted and placed on standby to enter the track and recover the debris once all cars had passed Turn One.

As soon as it became apparent that Lawson had pitted, the instructions to dispatch marshals were rescinded, and a double yellow flag was shown in that area.

We are still investigating what occurred after that point.”

FIA Praises Local Marshals Despite Scare

The FIA also emphasized its appreciation for the volunteers who help facilitate F1 races worldwide.

“We would like to underline our respect and appreciation for the local ASN, OMDAI, as well as the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez and their marshals, who are volunteers and play a vital role in the safe and successful running of our sport,” the statement added.

The governing body is expected to review communication protocols between race control and track marshals to prevent similar incidents in the future.
