F1 Driver Gabriel Bortoleto Joins FIA and Brazilian Government in Promoting Safer Routes to School Across the Country

FIA news The Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA), the global governing body for motor sport and the federation for mobility organisations worldwide, hosted today a launch event to highlight key road safety initiatives across Brazil. Taking place at the Autódromo José Carlos Pace as part of the FIA Formula 1 São Paulo Grand Prix, the event showcased the Brazilian Federal Government’s initiative to improve road safety in school zones through the development of a national school area road safety guide. In parallel, and with support from the FIA and FIA Foundation, FIA Member Club, the Associação Automobilística do Brasil (AAB), has developed the ‘Safe Way to School’ project. The initiative implements best practices in road safety by identifying risks for schoolchildren and promoting measures such as traffic calming, safe crossings, and reduced speed limits in school areas. The event brought together key stakeholders and local students, including Brazilian F1 driver Gabriel Bortoleto, providing a platform to present the findings of the project and underline the importance of advancing safer journeys for children across the nation. Speaking at the event, Gabriel Bortoleto said: “As a driver, I know how important it is to be safe on the track, but safety is just as important on the streets, especially for children heading to school. I am proud to support the ‘Safe Way to School’ project and to help raise awareness about measures that can make every journey safer. Together, we can ensure that children in Brazil can travel with confidence.” Ricardo Morales, FIA Region IV President (South America and Central America), said: “At the FIA, we believe that safety starts with the most vulnerable road users, and children are our highest priority. This project shows what’s possible when government, local organisations, and the motorsport community come together.” “Initiatives like this don’t just protect children; they help build safer, stronger communities. It’s a great example of how sport and mobility can work hand in hand to make the world safer for everyone.” Avi Silverman, Deputy General Director at the FIA Foundation, said: “We are proud to support initiatives like this, and it is a great example of how evidence-based interventions, from safe crossings to reduced speeds in school zones, can save lives. By working closely with local partners and communities, we can ensure that every child has a safe journey to and from school.”   -ENDS-  For media enquiries please contact:  Geri Sherwin, Director of Presidential & Mobility Communications:  gsherwin@fia.com    Roman De Lauw, Formula 1 Communications Manager : rdelauw@fia.com Laure Mercier Roussel, Head of Mobility Communications:  lmercier@fia.com    About the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile  The Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) is the governing body for world motor sport and the federation for mobility organisations globally.
