Oscar Piastri Reacts As George Russell and Kimi Antonelli Dominate Chinese GP Sprint Qualifying

Mercedes continued their commanding start to the 2026 Formula 1 season after locking out the front row once again during sprint qualifying for the Chinese Grand Prix in Shanghai.

George Russell delivered another standout performance to claim pole position for the sprint race, finishing 0.289 seconds ahead of teammate Kimi Antonelli as the Silver Arrows secured yet another front-row sweep.

The result reinforced the perception across the paddock that Mercedes have adapted best to the sport’s sweeping 2026 technical regulations, following their dominant display during the season-opening Australian Grand Prix weekend.

At Albert Park, the team had already demonstrated remarkable pace by securing both the front row in qualifying and a one-two finish in the race itself.

Their advantage appeared equally evident in Shanghai, where Russell’s lap placed Mercedes firmly ahead of the chasing pack while competitors struggled to match the outright speed of the newly developed car.

McLaren driver Oscar Piastri acknowledged the scale of the challenge facing rival teams after finishing fifth during sprint qualifying, describing the performance gap to Mercedes as notable despite a respectable lap.

“It was reasonable. I think the step in grip from the medium to the soft was pretty big. But yeah, obviously the gap to Mercedes is pretty impressive.”

The Australian driver ended the session approximately seven tenths behind Russell, underlining how difficult it currently is for other teams to challenge Mercedes on outright pace.

McLaren Encouraged Despite Performance Gap

Despite the evident performance gap to the leaders, Piastri remained relatively satisfied with McLaren’s overall performance after securing a solid starting position for the sprint race.

The 2024 world champion explained that his lap felt competitive given the circumstances and suggested there was little additional time available to extract from the car.

“So, some things for us to try and work on. I think the car felt pretty good. It was a pretty decent lap. I don’t think there was too much left.”

Piastri’s teammate Lando Norris produced a slightly stronger result by qualifying third, finishing just ahead of Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton and positioning himself well for the upcoming sprint race.

Norris admitted the result likely represented the maximum performance currently available to McLaren, although he was pleased to outperform Ferrari after the Italian team showed strong pace throughout the day.

“P3 is as good as we can do for the time being.”

“I’m actually pretty happy to beat both the Ferraris today because they seemed pretty good the whole day.”

Ferrari And McLaren Fight Behind Mercedes

Ferrari remained firmly in contention behind Mercedes during the session, with Hamilton securing fourth position while teammate Charles Leclerc placed sixth on the grid.

McLaren team principal Andrea Stella acknowledged that Mercedes currently appear unreachable in terms of outright performance, but he expressed satisfaction with improvements made by his team during the weekend.

“There’s some indications of improvements,” said Stella.

“Especially I would say in the way we understand how to use the power unit, there was less variability in the first practice session, more clarity as to how we were using it during qualifying.”

Stella added that these refinements allowed McLaren to close the gap slightly and compete more closely with Ferrari for positions immediately behind the dominant Mercedes pair.

“This was realised in some better lap times, which allow us to qualify behind Mercedes, that at the moment are out of reach.”

Sprint Race Battle Set To Intensify

With Mercedes occupying the front row and the chasing teams tightly packed behind, the sprint race is expected to produce a strategic battle among the leading midfield contenders.

Stella believes both McLaren drivers are well positioned to challenge Ferrari and potentially capitalise if any opportunity arises during the shorter race format.

“But it’s good to see that McLaren can fight for the runner-up position together with Ferrari, a good start position with Oscar and Lando, they both drove very well and it’s a good situation for the sprint tomorrow.”

While Mercedes appear firmly in control early in the 2026 season, the tight margins between the remaining teams suggest the fight behind the leaders could remain fiercely competitive throughout the weekend.
