Jorge Martin Smashes Mugello Speed Record With 368.6km/h Run At Italian GP

Mugello Circuit, the home of Ferrari’s private F1 testing track and host of MotoGP’s Italian GP, has witnessed a truly historic speed record being broken.
The Italian circuit is staging the seventh round of the 2026 MotoGP season, with Jorge Martin making his return to racing following a turbulent outing at the previous round in Barcelona.
At the Catalan GP, the 2024 world champion crashed on six separate occasions across the four-day event and was taken to hospital before being discharged.
Despite escaping the Barcelona weekend without adding to his major injury tally for the season, Martin revealed he is still nursing a foot injury from the multiple incidents earlier this month.
Speaking to media on Friday at Mugello, Martin admitted his confidence had taken a significant hit following the string of crashes he suffered at the Catalan GP.
“After all those crashes, I always feel that I’m about to crash…I need to work on my confidence,” Martin said, adding: “I’m used to crashes. This is part of our sport. But for sure, when you crash six times… you lose the confidence.”
By Saturday, Martin appeared to have found his form again, claiming a remarkable new top speed record at the Italian track ahead of the main race.
During FP2 at the Brembo Grand Prix of Italy, the 28-year-old reached 368.6km/h — equivalent to 229mph — the first time in history any rider had ever achieved such a speed at Mugello.
The milestone surpassed the previous record of 366km/h, which had been set by Brad Binder and Pol Espargaro with Red Bull KTM Factory Racing in 2023 and 2024 respectively, both at the same circuit.
Aprilia Racing Technical Director Fabiano Sterlacchini spoke to MotoGP reporter Jack Appleyard in the pitlane, expressing the team’s delight at the achievement and hinting that even greater speeds could follow this weekend.
“It was one of the targets that we had,” Sterlacchini said, crediting the result to collective effort across the team’s engineering and development departments.
“It’s super exciting to reach the highest speed ever; it’s thanks to the work of everyone at Aprilia in terms of aerodynamic perfection and engine performance, and everything is a synergistic work of all the aspects of the bike,” he continued.
“I’m not discounting reaching 370 km/h because clearly, with the right wind direction and slipstream, another 2km/h is possible!” Sterlacchini added, raising the prospect of yet another record falling before the weekend is out.
