Verstappen Speaks Out Against Pushy Parenting As Daughter Lily Turns One
Four-time F1 world champion Max Verstappen has shared his clear philosophy on raising his daughter, Lily Verstappen-Piquet, rejecting any form of forced direction.
The Red Bull Racing driver is determined to give Lily the freedom to choose her own path, drawing on lessons from his own upbringing to shape his parenting approach.
Baby Lily recently turned one, and Verstappen has spoken openly about cherishing the time he spends away from the F1 track with his family.
Speaking in an interview with De Telegraaf during the Canadian GP weekend, Verstappen emphasised that staying true to oneself is among the most important values he holds.
When asked what lessons from his own parents he was eager to pass on to Lily, Verstappen replied: “For me, the most important thing is to always be yourself.”
He made his stance on his daughter’s future abundantly clear, stating: “As far as I’m concerned, she can decide entirely for herself what she’d like to do later on, or not.”
Verstappen was particularly firm when addressing the topic of parents pushing children toward specific pursuits, especially in sport.
“There are lots of parents who push their children and want to steer them in a certain direction, for example when it comes to sport,” he said.
“That’s exactly what you shouldn’t do. I think you can introduce a child to certain sports, but ultimately they have to choose for themselves what they want to do.”
Despite his relaxed approach to choices, Verstappen does see genuine value in keeping an active lifestyle, noting that it carries real health benefits.
“Being active is generally good for you – it keeps you healthy and helps you avoid making poor choices,” he remarked during the interview.
Beyond physical wellbeing, the Dutchman also placed significant emphasis on the importance of family bonds and human connection throughout life.
“Cherish your loved ones, be kind to your family, and always remember that not everyone will be around forever,” he said, adding: “It’s essential to show empathy to those in your life.”
Verstappen became a father for the first time in 2025, with the arrival of Lily marking a significant personal milestone alongside his continued success on the Formula 1 circuit.
