Mick Schumacher Crashes Out Of IndyCar Podium Contention In Detroit
Former F1 driver Mick Schumacher squandered a golden opportunity for his first IndyCar podium after crashing in Detroit last weekend.
IndyCar was competing in Detroit for the eighth round of its 2026 season, having followed on from the dramatic Indy500 finish in round seven.
Alex Palou won the Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix to extend his lead at the top of the championship standings during a race that proved eventful further down the field.
Schumacher joined IndyCar as a full-time racer with Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing ahead of 2026, having been axed from F1 at the end of the 2022 season.
A late collision in the race brought out the safety car, catching out several front runners and handing Schumacher an unexpected opportunity to challenge for the podium.
With just 27 laps remaining, Schumacher restarted the race in second position, putting a maiden IndyCar podium firmly within his grasp.
However, Schumacher failed to even complete a full lap after the safety car restart, missing a corner and crashing into the barriers to end his hopes entirely.
He was classified in 21st position when the results were finalised, a deeply disappointing outcome given the circumstances that had fallen in his favour.
After eight rounds of the 2026 IndyCar season, Schumacher sits 25th in the championship standings, with his best finish coming at the Grand Prix of Long Beach where he finished 17th.
Across his seven other races, the 27-year-old has been classified in 18th twice, 20th, 21st, 22nd, 24th, and 25th, marking a difficult start to his IndyCar career.
The results represent a significant contrast to 2020, when Schumacher won the F2 championship and appeared ready to make a major impact in single-seater racing at the highest level.
