Carlos Sainz Targets Racing Career Deep Into His 40s
Williams driver Carlos Sainz has made clear he has no intention of stepping away from motorsport anytime soon, outlining ambitions to race for another decade.
The 31-year-old Spaniard is far from the oldest driver on the Formula 1 grid, with veterans such as Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton having extended their careers well into their 40s.
That longevity from those icons has served as inspiration for a new generation of drivers looking to push the boundaries of how long a career can last in the sport.
Sainz finds himself in a comparable position to Nico Hulkenberg, who at 38 has also shown no desire to retire, according to Audi boss Mattia Binotto.
Both drivers are currently racing for teams that, despite carrying iconic names, are rebuilding their Formula 1 programmes from the ground up.
Sainz is aware that bringing Williams back to the front of the grid will be a lengthy process, and he is determined to see that project through.
In an interview with Vanity Fair Spain, Sainz outlined his long-term vision and expressed a clear desire to keep competing well beyond his current age.
“I envision a long career. And I think I’m someone who will be in the world of sports, and motorsports specifically, for quite some time,” he said.
“I don’t know in what role or how, but I’d like to keep racing from at least 31 to 40 years old for sure, whether it’s Formula 1 or any other discipline. And from there, I’ll look at my personal and family situation and decide if I want to continue racing or if I want to dedicate myself to another role within the sport.”
Sainz acknowledged that his ambitions could change over time, adding: “Maybe in five years you’ll interview me again and I’ll tell you something different, but right now that’s what I want to do.”
In the same interview, Sainz also spoke about his relationship with Scottish model Rebecca Donaldson and said he has grown more open to the idea of fatherhood.
Sainz is the son of two-time World Rally Champion Carlos Sainz Sr, and his comments raise the prospect of a third generation continuing that famous motorsport dynasty.
