McLaren Hit With €30,000 FIA Fine After Tape Blocks Safety System At Monaco Grand Prix
McLaren endured a difficult start to the Monaco Grand Prix weekend, with both Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri struggling for pace in Friday practice sessions.
The troubles were compounded significantly when the FIA launched an investigation into the team following an incident during FP2 at the circuit.
Norris brought his MCL40 to a halt at the Nouvelle Chicane with a battery and electronics issue, the car shutting itself off completely during the session.
The stoppage triggered a virtual safety car as marshals moved to recover the stricken machine from the track at Monaco’s notorious tight street circuit.
Recovering the car proved far more difficult than expected, with marshals requiring a set of wheels to move it due to the clutch being engaged on the vehicle.
The clutch disengagement system, known as the CDS, failed to operate as intended, directly preventing marshals from safely and efficiently clearing the car from the circuit.
FIA stewards later revealed that the CDS failure was not a mechanical fault but was instead directly caused by an action McLaren had taken themselves before the session.
The team had applied a strip of transparent tape over the CDS button on the car, with McLaren admitting the tape had been placed there for aerodynamic reasons.
Both McLaren and FIA representatives acknowledged that covering the button completely undermined its intended function, which is to be activated quickly by a marshal wearing protective gloves.
The team further admitted that removing the tape and pressing the button manually was impossible without the use of tools, making a swift roadside fix entirely out of the question.
As a direct result of the breach, McLaren were issued a penalty of €30,000, with €10,000 of that sum suspended for a period of 12 months subject to no further violations of the same regulation.
The incident added further frustration to what was already a difficult Friday for the reigning world champions, with performance also a concern heading into the rest of the weekend.
