George Russell Sets The Pace In Q2 As Mercedes Dominate Barcelona Qualifying

George Russell underlined his intent at the 2026 Barcelona Grand Prix by setting the fastest time during the second qualifying stint on Saturday.
Russell is determined to prevent his Mercedes team-mate Kimi Antonelli from extending his Formula 1 title charge, having already made his presence felt by topping the timesheets in FP3 earlier in the day.
The two Mercedes drivers have shared all six pole positions across the 2026 season so far, making them the clear favourites to lock out the front row once again at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.
McLaren had appeared capable of challenging Mercedes heading into Saturday, but the papaya squad delivered a disappointing qualifying performance that left even veteran commentator Martin Brundle scratching his head.
Reigning champion Lando Norris ended the second qualifying stint in fourth place, while Oscar Piastri managed seventh, with both McLaren drivers securing their spots in Q3.
Both Alpine drivers were among those who failed to progress, with Franco Colapinto and Pierre Gasly eliminated at the Q2 stage alongside Arvid Lindblad, Gabriel Bortoleto, Oliver Bearman, and Carlos Sainz.
The Q1 eliminations saw Esteban Ocon, Alex Albon, Sergio Perez, Valtteri Bottas, Lance Stroll, and Fernando Alonso all fail to make the cut for the top 15.
Alonso’s early exit carries particular significance given his recent announcement that this weekend could represent “probably last race” in Formula 1.
The 2026 season has brought notable changes to the qualifying format, with the expanded grid now featuring 22 cars meaning six drivers are eliminated after both Q1 and Q2, rather than the previous five.
Q3 has also been extended by one minute, with the pole shootout now lasting 13 minutes rather than 12, giving drivers a slightly longer window to set their definitive lap times.
The additions reflect the broader regulatory overhaul that has reshaped Formula 1 competition this season, though the qualifying structure changes are considered relatively minor compared to the sweeping new technical regulations introduced for 2026.
Mercedes heading into Sunday’s race carry strong momentum, with the Silver Arrows having controlled much of the weekend through their consistent pace advantage over the rest of the field.
