Wolff Credits Hamilton’s Ferrari Form To New Car Era And Personal Happiness

After watching Lewis Hamilton take a stunning victory at the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix, former boss Toto Wolff has offered his thoughts on what is driving the seven-time champion’s revival.
Hamilton endured a torrid debut season with Ferrari in 2025, failing to score a single podium finish throughout the entire campaign with the Scuderia.
The turnaround in 2026 has been dramatic, with Hamilton collecting podium finishes in China, Monaco, and Canada before sealing his maiden Ferrari victory in Barcelona on Sunday.
Hamilton started alongside George Russell on the front row and committed to an aggressive three-stop strategy, looking capable of challenging for the win even before race circumstances intervened.
A virtual safety car with five laps remaining allowed Hamilton to pit and emerge ahead of both Mercedes drivers, pulling clear to secure Ferrari’s first victory of the 2026 season.
It was also the first race of the year not won by a Mercedes, with Russell having won in Australia and Antonelli taking every other grand prix prior to Barcelona.
Wolff was among the first to congratulate his former driver after the race, speaking warmly about Hamilton’s perseverance through a difficult period.
“He’s worked so hard and has gone through so many difficult moments, particularly last year, that wholeheartedly I’m happy for him that he’s won,” Wolff said.
Wolff also reserved praise for Ferrari team boss Fred Vasseur, acknowledging the enormous pressure that comes with running the Scuderia during a challenging stretch.
“The pressure running Ferrari is enormous, and that’s why I’m happy and relieved for him,” Wolff said of Vasseur, adding that his friend is “close to my heart.”
When asked to explain Hamilton’s resurgence, Wolff pointed to the nature of the 2026 regulations as a key factor in unlocking the Briton’s natural abilities behind the wheel.
“Hard work and I think this is a car that is maybe different to the previous era cars with the bouncing, with the stiffness, maybe not easy to feel,” Wolff explained.
“This is back to more conventional driving in terms of, I would say, at least aerodynamics and vehicle dynamics,” he continued, noting that Hamilton’s driving looks “strong” this season.
Wolff also highlighted the positive dynamic Hamilton appears to have developed with his race engineer as another contributing factor to the resurgence.
In a candid moment, Wolff suggested Hamilton’s personal life is also playing a role, saying “Maybe the girlfriend helps! It helped me to have a partner that, you know, you have a stable family life and they seem to be getting on really well.”
Wolff summarised his overall assessment with a concise observation about the connection between happiness and performance, stating plainly: “If you are in a good place, you win.”
Hamilton’s Barcelona win also carries significant championship implications, reducing his deficit to championship leader Kimi Antonelli to 41 points after the Ferrari driver retired late in the race.
Russell’s second-place finish leaves the Mercedes man just nine points behind Hamilton in the standings, setting up what promises to be a fascinating three-way title battle for the remainder of the season.
